Selv om jeg er født i Hellas har jeg ikke besøkt alle øyene!
Noen venner fikk overtalt meg til å dra til Santorini. Jeg ble fortalt at byen Fira var stedet.
Det var mange ledige rom på Internett så jeg fant raskt frem til et rimelig sted. Dessverre på gal side av byen med utsikt mot flyplassen. Alerede i havnen fikk jeg avsmak på stedet. Du må ha bil for å ta deg frem på øya, vell og bra et bilutleiefirma i havnen tilbød bil på stedet til 50 euro for 2 dager, ingen upris. Bilen var imidlertid gammel og full av små skrammer! Jeg tok derfor frem kameraet i all stillhet og fotograferte hele exteriøret. Den endelige kontrakt skulle jeg skrive på kontoret oppe i byen, ok , dro dit og kontaktet personalet. Den som kom ut begynte straks å se over bilen, "Dette merket er nytt" !!! det koster egentlig 200 ero, men om vi kan gjøre opp kontant slipper du med 100!" DA ble jeg forbannet!!! Jeg viste frem bildene, og da jeg dertil gikk over til å snakke gresk ble han usikker og trakk kravet tilbake! En engelskmann som viste seg å bo fast på Santorini hadde oversett hele opptrinet fortalte meg at det var en måte alle ansatte i utleiefirmaene brukte for å tjenepenger! Firmaet hadde ikke noe med det hele!
Neste dag skulle jeg oppleve noe liknende. Det er vanskelig å parkere en bil i Fira, eneste mulighet er i utfartsveien. Da jeg fant en plass så jeg tilfeldigvis i speilet to gutter som stillet en motorsykkel like bak bilen og veltet den med et brak. Jeg hørte hyl og spetakel bak meg. Da jeg kom ut av bilen ropte de to guttene ut anklager på dårlig engelsk! "Du har ødelagt vår motorsykkel!!" De forlangte 300 euro, men om jeg betalte straks skulle det koste 200! Da ville jeg slippe ubehageligheter med politiet! Jeg visste med meg selv at jeg ikke hadde vært i nærheten av sykkelen. Da jeg begynte å snakke gresk ble de ikke lenger så agressive, det ble imidlertid jeg, jeg sa min mening om dem ganske ettertrykkelig på gresk samtidig som jeg tok frem telefonen og sa at jeg ringte politiet. Da ble det fart i saken, begge slengte seg på sykkelen og forsvant!
Lit senere på kvelden observerte jeg de samme 2 guttene, de var i gang igjen med det samme "spillet" på samme sted!
Ikke noe hyggelig førsteinntrykk av Santorini!
Bedre skulle inntrykket ikke bli! Fira er overturistifisert, du "vasser i turister" Enorme grupper som går som saueflokker.
Elendig kvalitet på restauranter, og det verste, byen er full av bæsj etter alle mulldyrene som kontinuerlig løper gjennom den lille byen i store flokker.
Utsikten over "de hvite husene på kanten av stupet" var også en skuffelse, de var nå heller grå!
Solnedgangen var fin, den lar seg ikke spolere!
Helhetsinntrykk Fira, forfall, drittlukt og skitt pluss overturistifisert.
Det som er Santorinis største atraksjon, Akrotiri, var stengt, ingen kunne si når den åpnet. Stedet var fult av byggemaskiner og store kraner så det var helt klart at noe var på gang.
En kjøretur rundt hele øya virket ikke imponerende. Det eneste lyspunktet jeg kunne finne på øya var Tholos, helt oppe på nordspissen, her var det ikke så mange turister og jeg så eller luktet ikke noe mulldyrbæsj!
For meg, Santorini never again! Jeg fikk nok!

Har samme inntrykk som deg av Fira, og kunne heller aldri tenke meg å dra tilbake. Og skremmende å lese om hvordan noen prøver å lure "dumme" turister, flott at du gjør oss oppmerksomme på det!
Jeg glemte å si at de drittguttene som drev kjeltringstrekene med motorsykkelparkering var IKKE grekere! Dertil snakket de språket alt for dårlig! Et ord forstod de : Αστυνομία , Astinomia! Politi!
Santorini tillhör inte heller mina favoritöar även om jag haft det trevligt där också. Alldeles för exploaterat för min smak och mycket skräpigt på flera ställen på ön. Akrotiri som du nämnder har varit stängt i flera år nu och det verkar oklart när de tänker öppna igen.

Det är väl tur att vi alla är olika o kan tycka olika om saker och ting.
Själv har jag Santorini som absolut favoritö o har varit där 16 ggr, 3 veckor per gång, o har fortfarande inte sett allt jag vill se, utan längtar tillbaka så snart planet lyft från marken... Hyr alltid bil o har tack o lov aldrig råkat ut för några incidenter av det slag som beskrivits ovan. Pratade med goda vänner på Santo häromveckan o dom hade fått besked att Akrotiri förhoppningsvis öppnar nästa säsong, men det kan man aldrig veta säkert... Arkeologiska Institutet i Aten har svarat mig väldigt svävande de senaste fyra åren "Maybe next Year..." o i mars fick jag budet "tidigast sommaren 2011". Ursprungliga planen var ju att öppna våren 2007, men efter att taket rasade in o dödade en turist har det tyvärr varit helt stängt. Med den trassliga grekiska ekonomin o uteblivna grekiska fastlandsturister börjar dock många i lokalbefolkningen klaga över att en av medelhavets största turistattraktioner fortfarande är stängd, så förhoppningsvis händer det något under vintern o våren!
Det kunne være interessant å høre hvem du har leiet bil hos, jeg syntes det er riktig å oppgi navnet på det firmaet som jeg leiet hos, SPIRIDAKOS.
Har noen erfaring med dette firmaet? Jeg fant at det er flere ting som ikke er akseptable med dette firmaet.
Det første var at de på direkte spørsmål sa at det ikke var noe depositum. Deretter forlangte de kreditkort som de ikke bare tok avtrykk av, men de noterte sikkerhetsnummeret bak på kortet! Jeg fikk avtrykket tilbake da jeg insisterte på det etter at bilen var avlevert, men de kunne ha kopiert det!
De forlangte 50 euro kontant for 2 dager idet de lovet at det ikke ble mer å betale. Alle omkostninger og forsikring var inkludert. Jeg fikk ingen kvitering på de 50 Euro uten å insistere, da fikk jeg påskrift på en brosjyre med et fornavn som underskrift. Dette er et ugyldig dokument i retslig sammenheng!
Da jeg kom til hovedkontoret oppe i Fira opplevet jeg foruten forsøket på å få betaling for en skade jeg ikke hadde forårsaket, at de presset meg til en ekstraforsikring på 19 Euro pr dag, imotsat fall ville jeg måtte betale for en hver skramme bilen ble påført. På bakgrunn av de satsene som var nevnt lot jeg meg skremme. Siden har jeg fortått at dette beløpet ikke står i forhold til leien på 25 Euro pr dag! Grekere er i bunnen meget hederlige mennesker, jeg hadde en følese av at dette firmaet ikke var gresk annet enn i navnet! To av de jeg snakket med brøt sterkt på språket og flere av de andre så heller ikke mye greske ut!
Jeg leieri hvert fall aldri mer bil der!

Låter jättetråkigt att råka ut för sådan firma! Brukar själv helst hyra av Accordo/Easy i Perissa. Där har dom alltid varit oerhört trevliga o hjälpsamma. Brukar betala ca 20 Euro/dygn för en mindre personbil o då ingår helförsäkring. Dom hämtar mig på hotellet o skjutsar mig vart jag vill när bilen återlämnats. Har aldrig krävt mig på någon deposition eller bett att få se kreditkort! Det har räckt med att visa upp körkortet o uppge vilket hotell jag bor på. Får alltid själv välja om jag vill betala direkt eller i efterhand. När jag returnerat bilen har dom inte ens brytt sig om att inspektera den efter ev nytillkomna skador utan det har gällt ömsesidigt förtroende! Vet förstås inte om alla kunder behandlas så, eller om det beror på att jag ser extremt påplitlig ut... :D

Bravo! Du har funnet ut mer enn turistinformasjonen! Når du forteller at det er taket det står på forstår jeg. Det så ut som det var akkurat det som var på gang. 2 enorme kraner som så ut til å heise store takdeler på plass. Det som er uforståleg er mangelen på informasjon!

THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF REMODELING THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE. Introduction - Data
Akrotiri is located at the southern end of Thera, or Santorini, the southernmost island in the archipelago of the Cyclades, and lies approximately 60 nautical miles north of Crete. Thanks to its strategic geographical position, the island played an important role in the history of the Aegean in general. A significant factor that seriously affected developments both on the island itself and in the wider Aegean region, is the nowadays dormant volcano. To one of its eruptions, at the beginning of the Late Bronze Age (around the mid-seventeenth century BC), the collapse of the Minoan civilization on Crete has often been attributed. Certainly this eruption, the magnitude of which is estimated to have been about four times that of Krakatao, caused the submergence of a large part of the island of Thera and the burial of the remaining section under a thick mantle of volcanic ash. A large city, perhaps the only one on the island in the Bronze Age, was buried close to the site of the modern village of Akrotiri. On account of the excellent state of preservation of the ruins, the unique works of art that embellished the buildings and the abundance of information on early society in the Aegean, as well as the geological phenomena in the region, the excavation yields, the archaeological site at Akrotiri has rapidly become one of the most attractive for thousands of people with diverse interests. The interdisciplinary approach to the manifold problems, through organizing international conferences, and the considerable publicity given to the excavation from the outset, have undoubtedly contributed to stimulating the interest of the world scientific community and the general public alike. The necessity of constructing a shelter over the prehistoric city at Akrotiri on Thera, in order to protect from the elements the multi-storey buildings being brought to light, was realized by its first excavator, Professor S. Marinatos. Over the thirty years of its existence, that shelter has proved salvationary for the monuments.However, on account of the site's proximity to the sea and the acidity of the volcanic deposits, the DEXION metal frame has been badly corroded and is now in a precarious state. Moreover, the high asbestos content of the ELLENIT sheets roofing the shelter is a health hazard that contravenes EU legislation. Consequently the need to replace the shelter is immediate and imperative, both to avert the imminent danger of its collapse, with obvious direct and disastrous effects on the ruins and the 250,000 or so visitors to the site annually, and to obviate the pollution of staff and visitors by the carcinogen asbestos. Concurrently, a maximum benefit of the present project is its contribution to the development of Santorini and the Cyclades in general, by attracting cultural and educational tourism. Due to the ongoing process of excavation, conservation and documentation at the prehistoric settlement Akrotiri has developed into a particularly dynamic visit able archaeological site of worldwide renown. Consequently the new shelter must accommodate diverse functions, because alongside the archaeologists, researchers and excavation technicians working under it, are the thousands of visitors who circulate daily within the site, whose different schedules and interests dictate both the duration and the extent of their visit. The present study includes the full architectural, static and electrical mechanical applications study, the study of seismic risk, the soil-mechanics study, the study of simulations of natural cooling and lighting, the bill of quantities, the budget and the technical description of the construction of the entire project. It is the follow up to the preliminary study approved by the decision of the Central Archaeological Council 40/07.11.95, based on the results of the actual measurements and economic values derived from the construction of the full-scale pilot-experimental model, and is an original and innovative intervention in an archeological site, utilizing mild forms of energy and ecological materials. ]2. Aims of the design
Experience gained over the past thirty years from the operation and shelter of the archaeological site, coupled with advances in technology, not only permit multiple improvements of the existing situation by constructing the new shelter but also constitute the aims of the design as described below.
- To improve the protection of the monuments, staff and visitors, by using more durable materials and controlling absolutely the solar energy falling on the shelter.
- To rehabilitate externally the landscape by covering the entire shelter with the volcanic soil of the environment.
- To improve conditions of circulation for visitors and to ensure healthier conditions for personnel in the site (guards, workmen, archaeologists etc.).
- To enhance the monuments and make them accessible to visitors by designing special routes, while at the same time ensuring their absolute protection from the circulation of visitors.
- To upgrade the educational role of the site by organizing special thematic exhibitions on various aspects of the public and private life of the island's prehistoric inhabitants and by providing corresponding assembly points for groups of visitors.
- To guarantee the longevity of the shelter by implementing a modular system of construction, using better quality materials and providing facilities for maintenance/repair and replacement if required. The large and alternative routes increase the site's capacity, so that it can receive at least three times as many visitors as today. In parallel, the following specific but nonetheless important issues are confronted. Implementing a bio-environmental and ecological design with full exploitation of mild forms of energy. Neutralizing ultraviolet and infrared solar radiation and upgrading the natural illumination of the interior. Upgrading the quality of the air in the interior and preventing build-up of carbon dioxide (exhaled by visitors) by applying a totally non-energy consuming system of natural cooling and ventilating of the area to achieve a healthy environment for visitors, personnel and monuments. With all these improvements the new shelter at Akrotiri constitutes an innovative prototype, a model for the enhancement, presentation and management of archaeological sites.

3. The philosophy and strategy of the design
The volcanic eruption that caused the destruction of this unique prehistoric settlement in the seventeenth century BC covered the entire island with volcanic material and sealed the city, preserving it for 3500 years. Its discovery and excavation yield invaluable information on the society, culture, trade, art and work of the people of that period, mainly through scientific research and study of the finds, among them the remarkable wall-paintings that decorated the buildings.
The material that at once destroyed and protected the settlement, volcanic earth pumice and pozzuolana, was the central tool for defining the philosophy of the design of the intervention. Together with earth, sun, air and water complete the quartet of natural elements composing the central strategy of the design, which could be epigrammatically considered as a NON- INTERVENTION. From the four natural elements emerge the four basic qualities cool, warm, wet, dry that are also the basic aims of the environmental conditions in the archaeological site the new shelter is called on to serve.
- Earth is part of the external topography and the insulation of the shelter. The shelter is designed in such a way that it does not violate the overall harmony of the surrounding area with a large, massive structure, but is arranged as an extension of the surrounding ground, reconstructing the actual contours with dry-stone walls and planted with resistant vegetation of the local flora.
- Sun illuminates the archaeological site evenly (equal height lighting) through the special north openings. Penetration of ultraviolet and infrared radiation is prevented by a combination of the special glass and the arched wooden frames with graduated openings between the louvres, that also constitute elements of the shelter's nature as a continuation of the ground.
- Air ventilates and cools the sheltered archaeological site through the northward openings and the southward louvres. Renewal of the air and cooling of the site takes place in the evening, while during the day the visitors' exhalations (CO2) are abducted from the gap of the shelter frame through graduated openings between the wooden louvres of the roof. This natural ventilation cooling system maintains a constant temperature inside the shelter some 60C lower than that outside, achieving a natural, comfortable warmth without any technical air-conditioning support.
- Water, from the rain which permeates the ground of the shelter, is collected filtered in the south gutters of the arched surfaces of the roof and is channeled in the conduits along its length (east and west) to cisterns. So there is maximum exploitation of rain water for the needs of the site personnel and the visitors, as well as for the conservation of the archaeological finds.

SPIRIDAKOS, de driver hard markedsføring ihavnen!
Det koster 20 Euro, men disse typene vil prøve å presse deg til å betale ytterligere 19 Euro i forsikring samtidig som de vil kreve erstatning for gamle skader som alle bilene er fulle av!

For Akrotiri kommer jeg tilbake til Santorini, men da blir det ikke Fira og uten bil fra SPIRIDAKOS!
kifisia, jag har läst här på vårt forum vad du har skrivit och vad som har besvarats till det du skrivit om santorini.
Om man kommer till Santorini nere i hamnen så kan man nog bli uppkörd av dessa uthyrare av fordon. Att hyra något från en mindre ärlig person i hamnen eller uppe i Firatrakten kan ju inte vara bra. Santorini översvämmas av oärliga personer som vill skinna dig, speciellt under högsäsong. Jag tror att detta fenomen finns överallt i världens turiststråk.
Själv har jag kommit till ön mer än 40 gånger och då har jag lärt mig att nyttja de säljare som är ärliga. Men jag kommer oftast dit med flyg!
När man kommer till en ny ö första gången blir det säkert svårt att välja vem som är god eller mindre god att hyra av.
Det jag tänker och önskar av ni som skriver att ni blivit lurde är att ni som reser till en utvald plats i Grekland tar reda på lite mer om vad som gäller för denna plats. På detta forum får man veta det mesta för vad som gäller på i stort sett alla tillgängliga öar eller ställen som vi turister kommer till.
Tjyvaktiga människor kommer vi alltid att träffa på.
När jag hyrde en bil på Santorini senast och det var i min by Kamari. Det var 21-22 september per dag så betalade jag 20 Euro. Bilen var en sprillans ny SMART.

Senaste info om Akrotiri:
The restoration of the shelter of the archaeological site of Akrotiri in Santorini is rapidly progressing.
The architect for the project and consultant of the Archaeological Society Mr Nikos Fintikakis said to the newsletter "Paratiritirio" that 70% recovery of the shelter has already been achieved, including the section that had been damaged. He also said that according to the time schedule of the contractorsʼ consortium, full restoration of the shelter is expected by December 31, 2010 and completion of the project in its entirety is expected in May 2011.
