ATHENS -(Dow Jones)- The Greek public sector umbrella union ADEDY said Friday it is calling on its members to strike July 15 to coincide with the date that Parliament votes on a plan that would curb public-sector pension entitlements.
ADEDY has about 400,000 members and participated in a 24-hour general strike held Thursday, which was the sixth paralyzing strike this year. While participation in the strike was high across many sectors, the turnout for protests was muted.
Lawmakers will vote July 15 on a proposal that will strip away many of the pension privileges of the public sector to bring them broadly into line with the private sector.
However, ADEDY argues that public-sector workers have born the brunt of austerity measures because their bonus wages have been cut, their pay is frozen for three years and their income has further been squeezed because of the government's tax and VAT increases.
The additional austerity measures have been promised by the debt-laden Mediterranean nation in exchange for a EUR110 billion bailout from the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund, locally known as the "troika."
"The government and the troika are slaughtering our pension rights and these anti-social-security measures are unconstitutional, so we are calling on our members to stop work at 0800GMT next Thursday and join together in a protest march to Parliament," ADEDY said in a statement.[/CENTER]
